What is the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)?
The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for individuals with work experience in skilled trade occupations who want to live and work in Canada permanently. The program is managed through the Express Entry System, which ranks candidates based on a point system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Skilled workers in trades such as construction, manufacturing, and other technical fields can apply for Canadian Permanent Residency under this program.
Eligibility Requirements for FSTP
To be eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), applicants must meet the following key criteria:
1. Work Experience
o You must have at least 2 years of full-time, paid work experience (or an equivalent
part-time experience) in a skilled trade within the last 5 years. This work experience
must be in a skilled trade occupation listed under the National Occupational
Classification (NOC) Skill Type 7, 72, 73, 74, or 82 (such as electricians, plumbers,
welders, chefs, etc.).
2. Job Offer or Certificate of Qualification
o You must have a valid job offer for full-time, non-seasonal work in Canada in a
skilled trade, OR
o You must have a Certificate of Qualification in your trade issued by a Canadian
authority (if applicable to your occupation).
3. Language Proficiency
o You must prove your language skills in either English or French through an approved
language test. The minimum required Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) for
speaking and listening is 4 and for reading and writing is 3. Higher language scores
will earn you more points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS),
improving your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
4. Education
o There is no minimum education requirement for the FSTP; however, having at least
a high school diploma or higher education may strengthen your application.
5. Proof of Funds
o You must demonstrate that you have enough funds to support yourself and your
family once you arrive in Canada, unless you already have a valid job offer from a
Canadian employer.
6. Admissibility
o You must be medically and criminally admissible to Canada. This means you must
pass medical exams and undergo a criminal background check.
How the Federal Skilled Trades Program Works
Once you meet the eligibility requirements, you can create your Express Entry profile. Your profile will be entered into the Express Entry pool, where it will be ranked based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The CRS considers factors such as age, education, work experience, language skills, and job offers.
Candidates with the highest CRS scores are invited to apply for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada through regular Express Entry draws. If you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), you will have 60 days to submit your full application for PR.
Key Benefits of the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
